A nurse in Essex, England, found an abandoned suitcase on her way to work that contained 15 kittens, only 3 to 5 weeks old, hidden in a bush. The bag had ventilation holes, suggesting someone wanted the kittens to survive. It was left near an animal shelter.

The nurse alerted shelter worker Allison Gamble, who confirmed that the kittens were in good condition but had been separated from their mother. Because they were still too young to eat solid food, they needed immediate care.

The kittens are now being cared for at the shelter, although six have eye infections. Staff are monitoring them closely until they are old enough to be adopted.
