The method first caught the eye in Limpopo, South Africa, but has since been spotted in the US and elsewhere. Thieves use a simple but cunning tactic to target cars without the need for high-tech tools.

Here's how it works: They place an empty plastic water bottle between the car's wheel and the chassis—usually on the passenger side, where the driver can't immediately see it. When the driver starts the car and drives off, the bottle makes a loud noise.

Naturally, most people will stop their car and get out to see what happened. That's exactly what the thief is waiting for.

As long as the car is on or unlocked, a thief has plenty of time to steal it or take valuables inside, such as a phone or wallet.

To protect yourself, experts recommend taking a quick look at your tires before getting in your car. If you see a plastic bottle stuck between the wheel and the body of your car, don't touch it and don't delay.

Instead, go to a safe place and call 911 immediately. Tell them what you saw, where you are, and a description of your car.
