More and more pet owners are noticing strange red spots on their dogs' bellies. 😯If you've noticed such spots, we'll tell you what they are and why they appear.

If you've ever noticed red, inflamed circles on your dog's belly, your first reaction was probably to take him to the vet right away. And that's completely understandable.

But before you panic, it's worth knowing that these bites may not be as scary as they seem.

A veterinary clinic recently shared some reassuring news on its Facebook page, clarifying a common problem faced by pet owners.

It turns out that those red spots on your dog's belly could just be traces of fly bites.

“We are receiving an increasing number of calls from concerned dog owners about red bites on their pet’s belly,” the clinic said, adding: “These are bites from a certain type of fly that dogs usually get when they lie on the grass. They look scary, but they usually don’t bother the dog. These bites heal on their own and don’t need treatment. The flies appear every spring for a few weeks, then disappear. We hope this helps you worry less about your pet!”

The publication was more of a reminder and warning than a cause for panic, and its goal was to avoid unnecessary expenses for vet visits.

The post quickly went viral, with dog owners sharing their own stories of similar bites on their pets. Many were relieved to learn that there was no need for emergency veterinary intervention or unnecessary testing.

But what actually causes these nasty bites? The most likely culprits are black flies, which are widespread in North America, especially in its northern regions.

While black fly bites themselves are usually not dangerous, it is important to monitor your pet's skin condition and behavior.

Veterinarians warn that similar bites can also be caused by other parasites or allergic reactions. If something is bothering you or you notice any unusual changes, it's best to consult a veterinarian.
