Charcot’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a syndrome that typically affects people between the ages of 40 and 80. It usually begins with muscle weakness. A person with this disease can experience a rapid decline in health. Death occurs when the respiratory muscles become paralyzed.

The form that affects the spinal cord initially manifests as abnormal contractions and spasms in the legs and arms. Patients with this condition may experience muscle weakness and a higher risk of fever.

For those with the bulbar form, the first symptoms are problems with swallowing, chewing, and articulation. It affects the muscles of the mouth and throat.

The health of patients with Charcot’s disease deteriorates between three and five years. Over the years, the symptoms become more severe and widespread.

Not all patients with this condition experience the same symptoms. They may have joint pain, or a burning sensation. Communication and chewing can also be painful.
