Couple found this on the beach and won $70,000
It was a beautiful sunny day. While relaxing at the beach, English couple Harry and Angela Williams decided to take a walk along the shore.
While walking along Middleton Sands beach near Morecambe Bay, the couple suddenly noticed the foul smell of dead fish. When they followed the smell of rotting fish, they discovered a grayish lump, slightly smaller than a rugby ball.
The "stone," which was the source of the terrible smell, almost caused the couple to flee from where they found it, but Harry suddenly remembered something he had read.
The strange “fragrant” item may be valuable whale vomit!
And so it turned out! The smelly object turned out to be pure ambergris – a hard, waxy substance produced in the whale's digestive tract.
The couple had read about ambergris in the newspaper, so they wrapped the lump in a scarf and took it home.
Such "pebbles", accidentally found on the beach, can cost thousands of dollars. Most often, amber is used in perfumery. They say that its ability to retain odor for a long time is simply fantastic.
Buyers are willing to pay the Williams couple $70,000 for the 3.5-pound stinking rock. That's like winning the lottery! And all because the whale vomited in the right place at the right time.
Ambergris is secreted in the sperm whale's bile duct and intestines and is thought to be produced to facilitate the passage of hard, sharp objects that the whale may have eaten.
Next time you go to the beach, be sure to look around for special “scented” items.
