A minimalist style, but not so recent

At first glance, these black lines look like a modern tattoo: a simple design, a unisex style, perfect for those who like discreet yet powerful symbols. However, this motif is nothing new. It actually echoes  ancestral practices  from cultures around the world.

This resurgence of graphic tattoos is part of a broader trend: that of unapologetic minimalism. Two perfectly parallel black lines, often placed on the forearm or upper arm. Nothing more… and that's precisely their strength. Their elegance lies in their simplicity. They harmonize with any outfit,  whether it's a smart suit or casual wear . But this design hides a much older heritage than one might imagine.

An ancestral symbol revisited

Long before becoming a style choice, these black bands served as true markers of identity in many cultures. Among Polynesians, for example,  tatau -type tattoos  often included thick lines to signify an important passage in life: the entry into adulthood, a social status, or a rite of passage.

The Samoans, the Dayaks of Borneo, and some Berber tribes took a similar approach, using these lines as symbols of strength, maturity, or protection. Tattooing thus became a kind of body language, carrying a profound message, often linked to family, community, or memory.
