When Dr. Salinas looked at the ultrasound screen, the entire room became silent.
She slowly turned toward Diego.
“Mr. Diego,” she said, “before you continue insulting your wife, you need to take a very close look at what is appearing right here.”
Diego’s confident expression disappeared.
Paula stood behind him with her arms crossed.
“What exactly are you talking about?” Diego asked.
The doctor pointed toward the monitor.
“This pregnancy is not two months old.”
Diego frowned.
“What?”
Dr. Salinas looked at me.
“Laura, based on the measurements, you’re approximately fourteen weeks pregnant.”
My mouth fell open.
Fourteen weeks.
I looked at Diego.
He stared at the screen.
Then at me.
Then back at the screen.
“That can’t be right,” he whispered.
The doctor remained calm.
“I’ve measured the fetus several times. The estimated gestational age is consistent.”
Diego’s face slowly lost its color.
“But she told me she found out two months ago.”
Dr. Salinas nodded.
“That can happen. A woman can discover a pregnancy weeks after conception.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Diego suddenly shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became louder.
“No, that’s impossible.”
Paula stepped forward.
“Doctor, are you saying—”
Dr. Salinas interrupted her.
“I’m saying that this pregnancy began significantly earlier than your husband believes.”
Diego stared at me.
For the first time since the pregnancy test appeared, he didn’t look angry.
He looked confused.
Terrified.
Then Dr. Salinas added something that changed the entire situation.
“And there is another detail you should know.”
She adjusted the ultrasound image.
“Your wife isn’t carrying one baby.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
The doctor smiled gently.
“There are two.”
Twins.
The word seemed to echo inside my head.
