“You Fool, This Is…” — The Reply That Made Us Freeze
My wife was the one who noticed it first.
A tiny blinking light on the smoke detector.
At first, I brushed it off.
“Probably just the battery,” I said.
But she kept staring at it.
“It’s not blinking like a battery,” she whispered. “It’s… different.”
Something about the way she said it made me grab a chair.
I climbed up, unscrewed the cover, and looked inside.
That’s when my stomach dropped.
There was something else in there.
A small device. Not part of the detector.
A lens.SK
A hidden camera.
For a second, neither of us spoke.
Then everything hit at once.
We grabbed our bags, left everything else behind, and rushed out of the Airbnb without even turning the lights off.
Sitting in the car, my hands were still shaking.
“This isn’t normal,” my wife said. “This is illegal.”
She was right.SKI immediately opened the app and wrote a review, exposing everything—what we found, where it was hidden, warning others not to stay there.
I hit “post.”
A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.
A reply.
From the host.
I opened it.
“You fool, this is…”
I frowned.
What?
I tapped to read the full message.
“…a motion sensor, not a camera.”
I blinked.
My wife leaned closer.
“What does it say?”
I read it again, slower this time.
The host continued:
“That device is part of the upgraded smoke detector system. It detects movement for energy-saving features—nothing is recording you. If you had contacted me, I would have explained.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Had I… overreacted?I looked at the photos I had taken before leaving. Zoomed in.
The “lens” didn’t look like a typical camera. No wiring for storage, no transmitter visible.
Still… something felt off.
Then another message came in.
“For your peace of mind, you’re welcome to report it or have it inspected. I assure you, there is no camera in that unit.”
Silence filled the car.
My wife exhaled slowly.
“So… what now?”
I didn’t answer right away.
Because the truth was… I wasn’t sure anymore.
Were we right to panic?
Or had we just accused someone of something serious… without being certain?
I stared at the blinking light in the photo.
And even now…
I still don’t know if it was watching us…
Or if fear made us see something that wasn’t there.
